New Brighton to Parkgate

I wanted to see Wallasey because of an old family connection. I had en evenings walk on the Mersey side of the peninsula with great views across the Liverpool and the docks.

I headed round the peninsula on paths that largely ran along the beach. As I got to the South West point I could see an island in the distance and a large expanse of wet sand in between. I checked the tide times and figured I should be able to make it out to the island and back.

This took me to Hilbre island which was a real discovery. I could have lunch in an impressive stone-built abandoned lifeboat station and look across to the coast of North Wales. Then head back across the sands to West Kirby and my coastal path route.

The North side of the Dee estuary was allowed to silt up long ago as a channel was only maintained to the South. This left my destination, Parkgate, as a port without access to the sea. I found it charming and am developing a thing for ports that nature has left behind.
