Herne Bay to Margate
June 2024 · Lat: 51.3652 , Lng: 1.1177
This is a lovely walk between two places on the same train line. You drop down to the coastal path at Herne Bay and then are quite quickly out of town and walking along the sea defences.
A highlight is Reculver where there are remains of a Roman fort and a church tower that has been preserved as a visual aide for boats in the Thames estuary. This is the entrance to the old Wantsum channel that ran between the Isle of Thanet and the mainland.
The walk on from Reculver is flat and retains the feeling of the old channel even if is now farmland. As you head towards Margate you are (gently!) climbing up onto the Isle of Thanet.
Ending the walk in Margate means a dip in the sea if following the route in warmer months.
